Restoring the RCA 86K7 - Day 5

Cleaning the Chassis

Since we're waiting for parts to come in we're relegated to doing purely cosmetic work, so we're going to clean the chassis and get rid of all that magic marker and about 80 years worth of dust buildup.

One thing that I'm concerned with is not removing the original cadmium coating which is used for rust-proofing. Any removal of this coating must be replaced with something else to prevent the chassis from rusting in the future. Some areas have a rather serious rust buildup already so I will be hitting those areas with a Dremel wire brush, then paint that area with Rust-Oleum and then cover that with a nice dull gray color, but for the rest of the chassis, I would rather just clean it than strip it.

I wasn't altogether sure what to clean the chassis with so I decided to just start by removing all the magic marker. Since most magic marker inks are alcohol based, simple Isopropyl alcohol is usually sufficient to remove magic marker from just about anything.

After removing the first magic marker I realized that the alcohol also got rid of all the dirt and took it down to (I think) the cadmium coating. I can't tell if the alcohol is lifting the cadmium or not though, but it's doing a darn nice job of getting rid of the dirt.

After removing the first ink and test area

The nice part about the Isopropyl Alcohol is that it will remove the magic marker, dirt and grime but will not lift the original stamps off of the chassis. It also cleans the cans up quite nicely too.

WARNING:
ALWAYS TEST A SMALL AREA BEFORE PROCEEDING ESPECIALLY AROUND DIAL FACES!

Just because it didn't lift the ink on my radio does not mean it will not lift the ink on someone else's.
